Preston Grasshoppers Festival
Welcome to quite a special under 7s round up. This was the first festival we have been involved with as a squad, And what a successful day it turned out to be. As ever a massive thank you to all the mums, dads and grandparents who turned out in great numbers and made a lot of noise from the sidelines. Before I start with the games I think it would be right to state how proud myself and Barry are of each and every squad member. Five games in a day is tough but they all stayed the pace and every player contributed hugely to this success. And it was excellent to see how pleased they all were at the end. Right then onto the important stuff-The rugby.
The most impressive aspect of our performance was the fact that we got better as the day went on. The group games against Fylde, Blackburn and Hoppers were all good performances and it took a lot of team work to get through the group. We were not at our best yet, but all the kids work so hard that even if they are not at full speed they still all compete fiercely. Drawing our first group game against Fylde 3-3 (Ryan 1, Bobby 1, Callum H 1) put a little pressure on the next two games. However a convincing win over Blackburn 6-2 (WHICH SAW JACK TOMLINSON'S FIRST EVER TRY, Bobby 2, Marcus 2, Ryan 1, (Jack 1) and a very hard fought 3-2(Marcus 1, Thomas 1, Daniel 1) win over Hoppers which was a bit physical to say the least meant we topped our group. A great achievement for the whole team.
The Semi final pitted us against Firefly's who had already had impressive wins over Warrington and North Ribblesdale. This game swayed one way then the other, With both teams showing superb attacking power and impressive ball handling skills, Each defence was severely tested. Yet both teams held a solid defensive line and a number of excellent tags were snatched. The lads from Tarleton stuck to their task well and took all the opportunities Firefly's gave them. Good solid forward running throughout the match left a few holes for Bobby and Marcus to exploit. With the scores tied at six all we had a free pass five yards from the Firefly's line, This was on the back of three good runs making ground from our own half. So it was time to bring Marcus in and he duly finished in the left corner, This was the last play of the game. Resulting in a win 7-6 (Marcus 3, Thomas 1, Bobby 2, Jacob 1).
The final was to be against Vale of the Lune, Who had won all of their games so far. Also as a side note Vale had a team in every single final!! Vale are an excellent well drilled outfit who play good running rugby. Both sets of players must have been a bit tired by now but this did not show, In a match of unbelievable excitement and tension that was a joy to be involved with. In this game every single Tarleton player was at their best, the whole squad defended and attacked as a unit and looked after each other well. Mid way through the first half Tarleton held a 3-1 lead but Vale pulled back to 3-3 at half time. The second half saw some lovely flowing rugby from both teams with Tarleton responding quickly to any Vale try. Even though 14 try's were scored in the final both teams defended hard and with discipline and each try had to be earned. And the final score was 7-7 Tarletons try's coming from Daniel(2), Bobby(1) and Marcus (4). But this as with the whole season this was as a result of a full squad effort. The trophy was to be shared, A fitting end to a superb game of mini rugby and a brilliant festival. A thank you at this point to Hoppers for their organisation for the day. And to the ref in the final who I think all would agree was excellent and allowed a superb game of rugby to develop.
SAM ROBERTS- As ever our defensive coordinator was superb at the back. He marshaled the right wing defence all day and stopped a few certain try's. Always willing to carry the ball forward and make a few yards or draw the foul. As usual ran and chased any attacker often leading to a grabbed tag.
CALLUM HAGGETT- A powerhouse of a forward runner, Always made good yards forward scoring one great try against Fylde. Held his defensive position well. Even shouting others to fill gaps. Passed the ball well today, And showed really good levels of discipline.
RYAN WOOLFENDEN- He is now turning into a great team player, Not frightened to take the ball in and draw a few defenders to his tag before off loading well. Defended stoutly all over the field. And did not tire, and came up with two important try's. Also concentrated excellently for all 5 games.
CALLUM DAVIES- Mr Consistency does it again. A superb days rugby from Callum Ran well in attack, off loaded accurately and defended with strength and speed. As solid in all departments as ever, and ran right through every game showing excellent stamina.
JACK TOMLINSON- His first try today and a trophy, This is nothing more than Jack deserves after joining the team mid season. He continues to improve all the time, And showed brilliant potential in both attack and defence. Jack's try definitely gets play of the day.
JACOB ROBERTS- The quiet man's best performance for a while. Jacob was much more aggressive today in both attack and defence. Scoring one excellent try and supporting the ball carrier much better. Stronger in defence snatching a lot of tags. Another player who keeps the defensive line in order.
ROBERT WINCER- Captain and player of the day-- An absolutely scintillating day for our king of the side step. Scoring six try's. Bobby showed excellent levels of support play, And as ever his drifty running style left some defenders in knots. On top of this though was a very strong defensive showing. Leading to his second player of the day award.
MARCUS LAZENBY- As ever Marcus put in a great shift, Scoring another ten try's(His Dad must be nearly bankrupt by now!!!) Marcus as usual picked holes in the defence an ran straight through them on many an occasion. Did not tire all day which is impressive as Barry realised at the end Marcus had not been subbed at all through the day!!
THOMAS WATERWORTH- This lad continues to improve and impress, Scoring two try's and defending with gusto. He is now starting to realise how strong he is and is running through a few defences. He is passing well and his general ball handling skills are a lot better.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- Daniel turned in his A game today, Scoring three try's, Two in the final. Stood up to a bit of rough treatment when being forced out of touch on a few occasions only to get straight back up and get stuck in. Again created holes in the opposition defence with good forward running and solid off loads. Also more mobile and aggressive in defence. Grabbing a good number of tags.
We are a home to York next week, more details to follow very shortly.

Formby Vikings 5 Tarleton 8
Ormskirk 5 Tarleton 7
First of all a thank you to Formby Vikings for organising the day so well, In what has been we think a great season for the kids this was about the best performance to date. Each player putting in a superb effort and showing very good skill levels. It was nice to turn up at Formby after all the rain to find the ground so dry, And a very good size pitch set up after the narrow ones at Fylde. This lead to all three teams playing some really good open rugby. Also they had some mini posts set up so the kids could take a shot at goal after scoring, This they all enjoyed and had a stab at with varying degrees of success. It was decided that Tarleton would play their games back to back, So onto game one, Against an ever improving Formby side we again held a good defensive line and attacked quickly. Our runs had to be a bit more decisive today as the six tag rule was in place, And indeed they were.
The star of the first match was undoubtedly Marcus scoring SEVEN of our eight try's, However this was done on the back of hard straight forward running from the rest of the lads punching holes and leaving Marcus the gaps he loves. A short turn around into game two. Against a very well drilled and fresh Ormskirk team, Ormskirk as a whole appeared a little quieter today, Not quite sure why!!! However this was probably our best team performance of the season. Ormskirk had a solid attacking threat and were quick to break when they had possession, Most impressive was their defence, the line they held was superb and our lads had to work extra hard to break through. This however we did on seven occasions to hold on for the win. The support running in this match was excellent even when Ormskirk had us pinned we had an outlet somewhere. Also on numerous occasions we took the ball in hard and straight again to create gaps. Our defence held strong enough to force a couple of errors which was pleasing to see. A brilliant effort to stay up with the pace in both games, Also for the stato's among you Tarleton did not knock the ball on once today, Even under pressure all the passes were accurate and the handling excellent.
CALLUM WOOLFENDEN- Callum decided to take to the field today, after his usual good training session he donned the shirt and headed into play. And the lad did really, well chasing for tags and with ball in hand showing a good turn of pace. We just have to sort out exactly which way we need to go!
ROBERT WINCER- Again the ever improving Bobby turns in a great show, The king of the side step scoring one try and always creating havoc in the oppositions defence with his runs. His defensive play today was excellent chasing all over the field, but holding his position when needed.
SAM ROBERTS- With try under his belt now Sam is looking to burst some defences open, And he gave it a good go. Strong with ball in hand making good yards. And as our defensive coordinator organising well. With his usual volume level.
JACOB ROBERTS- The quiet man showed us what he is capable of today. Scoring a great try, He pinned his ears back from a standing start and left the defence for dead. More of the same in future from Jacob please. Again defended stoutly always looking to nip tags.
JACK TOMLINSON- This lad has become such a good asset to the squad, Today he made superb forward runs off loading the ball well to create at least three try's. And an absolute terrier in defence, Probably grabbed the most tags on the day. Also runs all day and never seems to tire.
RYAN WOOLFENDEN- Captain for the day - As usual Ryan turned in a good performance with some strong running and solid defending. Grabbed the decisive try against Ormskirk. Ryan's passing was much improved today always giving the ball to his team mate at a good pace.
THOMAS WATERWORTH- Thomas is turning into real defence breaker, A couple of times against Ormskirk we were drifting along their line, Only to give the ball to Thomas who burst straight through. He snatched two well deserved try's today. Also defended strongly.
MARCUS LAZENBY- PLAYER OF THE DAY FOR THE 3rd TIME THIS SEASON- Marcus scored TEN try's today remember Marcus that's TEN! (Just in case your dad, who pays you by the try forgets!!) Marcus showed how superb support running pays off today, He was on the shoulder of the ball carrier at all times, Also off loaded well when tagged. And was sharp in defence.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- No try's today but close to his best performance. When he had ball in hand always tied up three to four defenders with barnstorming forward runs, Leaving big gaps for the speedsters to exploit. Set up at least four to five try's and as ever worked superbly hard in defence.
Once again thank you to all the parents for getting the kids to the game, And all the encouragement from the sidelines. It makes a huge difference. We are at the Hoppers festival next week and hope all the squad can make it. In our group we have Fylde, Preston Grasshoppers and Blackburn. More details to follow later.

Fylde 6 Tarleton 6
Formby Vikings 9 Tarleton 10
SAM ROBERTS FIRST TRY!
Hello again everyone and welcome to another under 7’s Sunday report. Again many thanks to those who made the journey, And Michelle for scoring the second game. It did not start too well, We think a combination of the clocks going forward and location, Meant only five members of the 7s squad were available today. However the vast resources of the under 8s were kind enough to offer us the services of Conner Carroll and Michael Hope. Thanks to both lads for stepping in, also Janet and Rob for lending them to us. Right then onto the rugby...
Again we were one of three teams on show today and all played well. The pitches were quite wet under foot, But the sun came out and all was well. The training session as usual was enthusiastically undertaken, and the kids were ready to face Fylde first up. Playing on the main pitch in front of a packed grandstand the game got underway, In all honesty it was a bit of a scrappy affair, With Fylde spending a lot of time off side the game did not really flow. I blame the referee for this he really should of got a grip! (sorry, but I have only reffed a couple!!!). Also the pitch was quite narrow and space hard to find. However we held a good defensive line and the support running was good.
Most of the try's were individual efforts as passing was made difficult by the number of players around the ball. There was no official scorer so we made it 6-6, a fair result. Onto the game against Formby Vikings. With Barry on the whistle this was much better. This game produced some fine rugby from both teams. We showed good positional sense, Always had a man in support and tagged much better. Again whenever a Tarleton man was tagged he had a player there to off load to and this lead to some flowing moves, with the ball travelling through several sets of hands at a time. The lads are all showing a better understanding of the game, Especially not standing off side and making good efforts to get back behind the ball to defend again. The final score here was 10-9 to Tarleton. Both games were played with 10 minute half's and all the lads lasted the pace very well. I have had to guesstimate the try scorers as we did not have individual named scorers, So if I get anything drastically wrong, I apologise.
JACK TOMLINSON- Captain for the day- Considering Jack is younger than most and has literally just started playing, He put in a great shift as skipper, Shouting the lads to fill spaces and pull back in defence. Some great tagging, But most noticeable of all some very good yards made forward, And is now staying inside the lines. Well done lad.
SAM ROBERTS- As the headline suggests this was a special day, Our defensive coordinator scores his first ever try, and from distance as well! A mazy run across field leading to a burst down the touch line! Sam also defended with his usual vigour and grabbed some good tags. And his Dad is now a tenner worse off!
CONNER CARROLL- Conner slipped in well, scored around four try's and was solid in defence. Made excellent yards forward every time he had ball in hand showing superb strength, And always found a man with his pass when tagged. Has a good ability to find space and hit the gap, Even if this means going a little way back first!
MICHAEL HOPE- Michael also gelled well with the rest of the lads. Michael gets play of the day, With FOUR tags in a row against Formby. Very solid in defence chasing every attacker down with gusto. Was always there in support of the ball carrier and we think scored three try's as well to cap off an excellent all round performance.
JACOB ROBERTS- Player of the day- With two try's and a much more involved attitude, Jacob really deserved this. Looking for the ball today and running forward with pace, strength and purpose. Again held his position in defence and even at times showing a little aggression to get those tags. Well done lad.
ROBERT WINCER- A superb show from our "king of the side step" Scored three try's and as usual left a lot of defenders bamboozled by his foot work, displaying his uncanny ability to find space when none is available. Passed very well when tagged. And offered full commitment in defence.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- Daniel's best display for a few weeks. Much stronger straight forward running leading to three try's. Also did not tire today and supported the runner well. Again showed nice passes when tagged. And defended well as part of the defensive line.
Again many thanks to all who travelled to make this possible, Also a thank you to my next door neighbours Mike and Anne who are originally from Fylde, They came along today to support the lads. A big shout to the rest of the squad who were unable to make today, Hope to see you next time, and that you are all well and happy. Cheers to Thomas Waterworth's mum for bringing the player of the day trophy at the end. We are unable to train next week due to the junior colts north of England final against Stockport at Tarleton, And the general size of the events going on around that. So I will send an e-mail as soon as possible to let you Know what is happening in two weeks time.
16 March 2008
Blackburn 5 Tarleton 10
Sedgley Park 3 Tarleton 5
Welcome to another under 7's roundup from another successful trip away. Again a big thank you to all the parents for bringing the kids to wind swept Blackburn.(Have we all got our hair back in place, Mine took about an hour to do!!!!!) Again we were represented in very good numbers. And as usual every player did their bit for the team. To gain another two excellent wins. Ok lets summarise the games, Tarleton were the dominant force in both games, If a little sluggish at times, We will put this down to the conditions, which were blustery to say the least. Against Blackburn we tagged and ran very well, Support running was very good and the finishing was excellent. We pulled out a good lead throughout the game and were always ahead. Both Tarleton and Blackburn scored some good tries, But it was our defence which gave us the upper hand. We then had a break before playing park. the break did not seem to help us as we were a little slow out of the blocks in the first half of this game. However the defensive line held and we stayed in touch at half time, To come out stronger in the second stanza. Park were a very useful outfit and gave us a very hard game, but we showed our talent in the second half. Good passing, superb support running, backed up by a much more aggressive defence which meant we ended the game really well. So massive pats on the back all round for players and those on the sidelines. Again thanks to Paul for scoring, And making these match reports possible.
JACK TOMLINSON- If we had an award for play of the day then Jack definitely would have won with his flying tag grabbed at full length. Played a full part in the day. Still got to watch those sidelines! Very well done
RYAN WOOLFENDEN- Another solid performance from the ever improving Ryan, Scored FOUR very good tries and defended well. Showed superb concentration throughout, To play well through the two games.
ROBERT WINCER- The king of the sidestep bags a hat-trick, and well deserved it was. Inked his way to the line on one occasion past at least five opposition players. Also enthusiastic in defence which is great to see.
SAM ROBERTS- Captain for the day- Well played skipper, Again the defensive coordinator was in fine form. Very vocal as captain, marshalling his troops with gusto. Excellent tagging, and tried a few forward runs.
MILLIE WHELAN- More involved this week, seemed to enjoy training entering into the games in fine spirit. Enjoyed her runs with the ball and always found a team mate with her pass.
JACOB ROBERTS- The quiet man held his position well and passed very accurately. Even on one occasion off loading before being tagged to create space. Made some good yards forward.
CALLUM DAVIES- What would we do without Mr. Consistency. Up to his usual high standards today, But topped it off by grabbing a hat-trick of great tries. Decisive forward running and solid defence.
THOMAS WATERWORTH- Player of the day- Thomas's best game so far. Ran straight, supported well, nipped tags and scored a try into the bargain. A well deserved award, well done lad.
CALLUM WOOLFENDEN AND TEDDY WATERWORTH- The future of the club looks good as our two training helps continue to improve. The hands are getting better and catches are now starting to stick.
MARCUS LAZENBY- Our third hat-trick hero!! Marcus turned in another impressive display both in attack and defence. An illusive runner who is always close to scoring, But also works hard in defence.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- Much improved today, Back on the score sheet with a long range try and pushing up quickly in defence. Good with ball in hand. And more aggressive grabbing tags.
As ever myself (Gary) and Barry are ecstatic with the kids efforts in difficult conditions. possibly the most pleasing thing for us is not the game play, but the enthusiasm they show in training. And I think this shows in the game performances. We hope you all have a fabulous Easter and scoff way to many choccy eggs. A shout to Callum Haggertt and Jacob Holt who were not at this fixture. We are off for Easter next week so we hope to see you all at Fylde on the 30th. Once again many thanks for your efforts.

Fleetwood 1 Tarleton 5
Fleetwood 0 Tarleton 5
A HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL THE PLAYERS MUMS!!
Hi ya gang, Another successful Sunday for the sevens. A superb turnout from Tarleton. Once again thank you to all who travelled the long distance to Fleetwood on a Sunday morning. The numbers were great and the energy and enthusiasm from the kids was brilliant. We had a good training session and this carried on into the games. It was a difficult morning because of the time between games and the lack of overall playing time. However a major cheers to Lee the Fleetwood coach who was looking after their sevens and eights!!
Game one showed that we were stronger than Fleetwood, We pressed home our advantage and ran in five tries, The first after only 5 seconds!!! We again defended well and did not let Fleetwood into the game. We carried on in game two, Even better as we did not let Fleetwood score. The defensive line was great. And if the first up tag was missed the player was being pushed to the sidelines and the support defenders were there in numbers. In attack we showed good patience and took our chances well. Again myself and Barry are ecstatic at the level of support play from all the kids. As a team we are creating a lot of chances. Each player even those not on the score sheet had a part to play in the game as a whole. Chances and tries were set up by every squad member, With good running, passing and even better handling. So well done to all.
ROBERT WINCER- As usual our king of the sidestep tormented the defence all day. His understanding of the game is improving all the time. And his ball handling is a joy to watch. Unlucky not to score, but set up a host of chances.
SAM ROBERTS- The defensive coordinator did well again. Good tag grabbing out wide, And had a couple of darts at the Fleetwood defence. Sam you will grab a try this season somewhere!! Keep going lad.
JACOB ROBERTS- Along with his brother looked mean in their new body armour!! The quiet man shouted the defensive line into place again!! A few runs at their defence and stood up well to any attack.
CALLUM HAGGETT- Captain for the day- The skipper was very impressive today. More focused in training and a good noisy captain. Good forward runs and strong defence made for a great all round performance.
JACK TOMLINSON- !!)- DEBUT- A fabulous showing from Jack. Played a full part in training and the game. Once we sort out were the touchline is we will motor forward! He showed a great pair of hands and did not drop a ball all day. Well done lad and welcome to the team.
MILLIE (APOLOGIES NO SURNAME YET, REMIND ME TO ASK NEXT WEEK!!)- DEBUT- What a great debut for little Millie. Never stopped asking questions and showed wonderful enthusiasm. Trained really well and even took a couple of runs at Fleetwood. Well done lass and welcome to the team.
RYAN WOOLFENDEN- Getting ever better, scored three well taken tries. Defended very well. And best of all kept a good level of concentration from the start of training to the end of the last game. Impressive display keep well done lad keep it up.
CALLUM WOOLFENDEN- Our training help again trained well, Joined in all the drills and is catching more ball. However we cannot compete with the attraction of a good old puddle!! Well done mate.
CALLUM DAVIES- Player of the day- After so many good displays Mr consistency final got his reward. Scored after five seconds!! and set the tone for the rest of the day. Another performance to be proud of from a player who is improving all the time.
MARCUS LAZENBY- Another SIX tries from our points machine. the third time this season Marcus has scored six. Also defended well. He supported the ball carrier so well all day that each try was richly deserved.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- Another good display from Daniel. A couple of defence splitting runs to set up scores. And forced attackers wide a out of play on occasions. Improved support running and passed well.
Thanks to Paul (Ryan's Dad for scoring), Again from myself and Barry major thank you's to all the parents who put the time and effort in to get the kids to these games. And we hope you are happy with what we are trying to do. The kids appear to be responding well, And we are competing with every team we come up against. A shout to Thomas and Teddy Waterworth who were not at this game, Hope to see you next week. And Jacob Holt who has a twisted ankle. Barry has had an idea to get the squad to vote for of the year. In the next few weeks we will put some forms together for the kids to have a look at. We hope this is ok with you all. We are at home (hooray!!) next week to collegiate.
9 February 2008
Ormskirk 6 Tarleton 6
Ormskirk 4 Tarleton 7
local derbies go, this was a good one!! Again thanks to all who attended and cheered on from the sidelines, And to Bobbies dad for scoring so well and neatly. And I also a believe a thank you for the ormskirk kitchen staff from Daniel's Grandpa and Jacob and sams mum for the quality of bacon butties is needed!! Ok then I guess we had better get onto the rugby. For the first time in what seems like months the ground was fairly dry underfoot. If however the general pitch terrain seemed a little HILLY in places! the weather was fine and all looked good. We had ten players on the day and all played superbly. The training session went well. However the first game was a bit of a struggle with ormskirk quicker out of the blocks in the first half. After the break our lads woke up well and tagged much quicker, held a better line and attacked with more vigour. To earn a good draw. In game two we showed what we are capable of. Tarleton were much the better side, ormskirk being forced to surrender possession on numerous occasions allowing Tarleton to boss the game. Ormskirk had to do all their attacking from deep as we held a great line and forced them backwards. Also in attack some bullish straight running, along with a little bit of speed and guile meant we played the game on the front foot. And any loose ball always found its way to a Tarleton player, this showed great determination. In rugby the referee is always right, as are the touch judges. A major thank you to you all for upholding these principles, This goes to both supporters and players. Enough said!
THOMAS WATERWORTH- After a quiet start picked up very well, one of the best support runners that we have. Always there for a pass. Tagged well and scored TWO tries.
CALLUM DAVIES- He is quickly becoming known as Mr Consistency, never turns in a bad day and always does the basics well. Again today attacked hard tagged hard and scored a well deserved try. And is definitely running off little knocks a lot better during the game.
TEDDY WATERWORTH AND CALLUM WOOLFENDEN- What would we do without our training helps. Both are improving all the time and the enthusiasm is great to see. Much better hands shown with some good catches during the passing drills.
MARCUS LAZENBY- Player of the day for the second time this season. And well deserved it was. Only another SIX tries. A brilliant all round performance. Especially in attack. The Ormskirk line did not know were Marcus would go next. Held a good defensive position. And passed well when tagged.
ROBERT WINCER- Captain for the day. Well done skipper, lead the troops well. And the "king of the sidestep" was in good form again. Scored one try and made numerous yards forward. He is improving all the time. This again showed in how he held his defensive position.
JACOB ROBERTS- A good steady day for the quiet man. Always carried strongly and offloaded with quicker hands than we have seen before. Supported well and grabbed a few good tags.
SAM ROBERTS- Our defensive coordinator was back on fine form. In the first game when all was not going well Sam came up with at least THREE try saving tags. A few yards made forward, however he never wasted possession, and always found a colleague with the pass.
RYAN WOOLFENEDEN- I hope Ryan's dad is able to climb down off cloud nine to read this! Very close to player of the day. With THREE tries and a much more aggressive defensive performance. Given the middle of the park to look after in defence he did so very well all day. Much straighter running and boy did it show.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- After a bit of a slow start came into his own late on. Punched three big holes in the ormskirk defence to create three tries, And was very close to scoring. More mobile in defence and ended up producing a fine performance.
We have a couple of training weeks coming up so we will be meeting at Carr Lane on Sunday as usual at 09:30am. As ever a quick shout to Jacob Holt who is on holiday, And to Callum Haggett who was unable to play on Sunday. We hope to see you all next weekend to continue the good work. And thanks once again to all who put the time and effort in to get the kids to the games, It does mean a lot to us.
27 January 2008
Wilmslow (Team 2) 4 Tarleton 5
Wilmslow (Team 1) 5 Tarleton 5
Wilmslow (Team 1) 5 Tarleton 6
WOW, What a performance from the whole squad, Myself and Barry as new still wet behind the ears coaches did not know how the kids would respond to us, and weather or not we would be well behind most other clubs. However this display, as I am sure all the parents present will agree, shows how well all the lads are doing. We worked on the defensive line before the game (Thanks to Michelle Woolfenden for judging the two teams!) and every player listened and took heed throughout the game. And this improvement meant the overall performance was so much better. We defended as a unit for three whole games and came away with one draw and two wins. As usual before I start the player reports a big thank you to all who made the journey your support on the sidelines is so important to the kids and us as well. Thank you to Michelle for scoring.
Another very heavy surface greeted us at Wilmslow and it was obvious the pitch we were going to use was going to cut up badly as the day went on. However after the recent monsoons Wilmslow did well to get all the junior and mini games on.
JACOB ROBERTS- The quiet man looked a little tired today, this did stop him getting a try and picking up good tags. Now making good yards with the ball in hand and passing much quicker when tagged.
SAM ROBERTS- SSOOOO Close to that first try, It is on its way, stopped just short of the line twice, Now looking to attack at every opportunity as well as keeping up his defensive coordinator role.
CALLUM DAVIES- Captain for the day- Took on the role as skipper with gusto. Ran harder and faster than we have ever seen before. And where did that voice come from! Yelling at the defensive line. Came up with a try as well. Superb game well done lad.
CALLUM WOOLFENDEN- Our training help. Callum is enjoying being part of the squad and his skills are improving all the time.
CALLUM HAGGETT- Player of the day- And so well deserved. Suffering from ear ache he still turned out a fine display for his second game. Very mobile and tenacious in defence. Snatched a try, Kept his temper under control and listened well. The most improved player from last week. Very impressive.
JACOB HOLT- 1st TRY- Very close to player of the day, A massive difference from even last week. In only his 2nd game of rugby. Made good forward runs, got some tags, always passed backward and even earned a score.
RYAN WOOLFENDEN- Another three tries for Ryan. Again great steps forward. Much more disciplined. Defended excellently for three games. And ran much straighter and harder. A top notch display from Ryan.
MARCUS LAZENBY- Mr. Consistency turned in another superb display. Scoring SIX tries in total, Scored in all three games. Defended very well and supported the runner all day.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- Continues to improve his understanding of the game and grabbed three tries, in a good all round performance. Always makes yards forward and was stopped close to the line on three other occasions.
A massive well done to the whole squad, This was against the best organised team we have played to date. After scraping past Wilmslow team 2, The difference in performance level against Wilmslow team 1 was outstanding. To compete and live with a team of this quality was heart warming to say the least. In these conditions we only knocked the ball on twice. And even when Wilmslow tagged us to a stand still we were able to get behind the ball carrier and recycle it. The defensive line was the most noticeable area of improvement and it showed in our improved tagging. In attack we are always a threat as the support play is also getting better. There are obviously many things to work on in training next week. but great credit goes to all the lads at Wilmslow for their display.
As usual a shout goes out to the members of the squad not there. Robert Wincer was all ready to attend before losing a fight with a door. Hope the hands feeling better and we have you back fit again soon. Teddy Waterworth who will join Callum as training help. Also Jacob and Jonathan Wincup who were unable to attend this fixture.

Tarleton 3 Waterloo 4
Tarleton 3 Waterloo 5
Hello again, its time to run through another exciting under 7s Sunday. Again conditions were very heavy under foot, The club did well to have any sort of rugby at Carr lane at all on Sunday!! However as always it was well worth it. The squad was expanded by two new faces today, making the total squad number now 14, fantastic numbers and a pleasure to coach. Waterloo were a well drilled side and proved difficult opposition, The lads did well to compete in all areas and but for a few passes going to ground the results could well have been different. Still fun is the main driving force and I think all would agree that this was achieved. A big thank you to Ryans Dad for scoring, (new faces and same names making things difficult!!!!), And Sam and Jacobs Mum for helping in the kitchen. And just to show the enthusiasm of the squad, Our lads were getting ready for a third stanza but Waterloo were not so keen. Great commitment and superb to see. We showed very good forward running and again no player was ever isolated, We are still tending to bunch at re-starts and maybe crowd the ball a little, but again very minor points which we will work on in training. And the defence was strong all day with only Waterloo's best runners breaking through.
SAM ROBERTS- Player of the day, Thoroughly deserved with his usual tough defence, now mixed with ever improving ball carrying skills, Confidence growing all the time, And that first try will soon come.
CALLUM DAVIES- Another improved performance and as ever in the reckoning for player of the day, Very good in defence and now making crucial forward yards. Passing is also improving all the time. Close to the try line on several occasions.
MARCUS LAZENBY- Mr dependable, never wastes a run and passed great, Trained hard. Snatched one excellent try and was close a number of times. Was gracious at the play of the ball, allowing the newer players to take runs when he was in prime position. Well done lad.
RYAN WOOLFENDEN- Going forwards again!!!, with the ref picking up on off sides Ryan decided to revert to straight running, With good effect, Scored one try and defended well.
CALLUM WOOLFENDEN- As ever our training help, And future secret weapon!! held onto three passes in a row in training, And is definitely understanding the game better.
CALLUM HAGGETT- DEBUT- A big welcome to the third Callum!! Fitted instantly into the squad and played a great game. Scored two tries on debut for Tarleton. Runs and supports well, Along with stout defending, A great start.
JACOB ROBERTS- The quiet man had quite an explosive offensive game today, Always broke the line with ball in hand, Creating chances for the team, Defended well out wide, And you can see confidence building in Jacob.
JACOB HOLT- DEBUT- Another big welcome to Tarleton for Jacob, It was Jacobs first ever experience of rugby today, Fitted in well and tried his best at all aspects of the game. Showed no fear with ball in hand, and was passing backwards before the end of the game. Another good start.
EDWARD WATERWORTH- Teddy's second run out, He is slotting in well and already showing signs of good game understanding. Had a couple of darts at the Waterloo defence, And did well to get the ball away when tagged.
JAKE WINCUP- Now really looking for the ball and wanting to get forward. Some good offloads and defending much better. Jake visible now enjoys carrying the ball and is improving fast.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- Captain for the day- Improving all the time. Grabbed two tries in the second game, And always attempted to set a good example as skipper. Even if organisational shouting was made difficult by the gum shield!! Much more forceful with ball in hand.
Once again thanks to all who attended, Late mentions now for Thomas Waterworth and Jonathan Wincup who missed the fixture today, We believe needing some attention in the physio room! Hope all is well soon. And Robert Wincer who was caught up in his birthday celebrations, Happy Birthday mate from the whole squad and we all hope you had a good one. If I have missed anything or anyone out I apologise and please lat me know. We are at Wilmslow next week, So sat navs out and hope see you all there.
13 January 2008
Altrincham Kersal 6-6 Tarleton
Altrincham Kersal 6-7 Tarleton
Altrincham Kersal 7-4 Tarleton
First of all a big thanks to all who made the long journey, However I am sure you will all agree that it was worth it. Some great rugby played by both sides in very heavy conditions under foot. After a good training session last week it was back to playing at Kersal. We played three games of seven minute halves with there being eight a-side. We had a good turn out of eleven players who all played a big part. Kersal had sixteen and were able to change the whole team each half, But all our lads hung in well and ran all day, All showing commitment and improvement.
RYAN WOOLFENDEN- Had a new backwards to go forwards plan! Again played hard and made good yards. Some really accurate passing and good support play. Scored 5 Tries, again a superb tally.
CALLUM WOOLFENDEN- Helped out well in training again, improving all the time, some catches now sticking, And we are sure he is close to playing. Was ready to go when we looked a little short! Well done lad.
JAKE WINCUP- Good passing and support play. Asking for the ball more and following the play much better. Stronger running than previous and getting close to that try line!
JONOTHAN WINCUP- FIRST TRY!!! Well done, first score for Jonathan, Surprised himself a little I think! All round improvement topped off with a score, Good day all round.
CALLUM DAVIES- Superb all day, great straight running, tags all over the place and never tired, Probably spent the longest on the field, And ended up with 3 well deserved tries, Including one which took three of the opposition over the line with him!
THOMAS WATERWORTH- Again the word is improvement, More aggressive in defence and managed a very good try in the last game which showed that he kept on going. Showing good hands and supported very well.
EDWARD WATERWORTH- DEBUT First game for Teddy, after an excellent training session last week he carried on today, Confident enough to take the ball up field. And tried really hard in defence. Well done lad.
ROBERT WINCER- Our very own King Of The Sidestep!! Sending defenders the wrong way all day, And grabbing a few tags as well, As always ran for the whole of the games. And finished with 2 tries.
SAM ROBERTS- Defence as ever the key for Sam. Hunting tags and stopping runs as often as he can. Very close to that first try. Taking more runs with the ball and running harder and straighter. Still the loudest voice in the defensive line!!!
JACOB ROBERTS- Our Captain for the day. and for the quiet man (who had been poorly through the week) he did an excellent job. Lots of noise and tried to organise his team. Occasionally even drowning out Sam!!! Good runs in attack and also supported and passed well.
DANIEL COUTON-CHRISTIE- Player of the day for the first time. Ran all day and didn't get tired today! Scored 5 tries and grabbed a few defensive tags. Again hugging the touch line and causing problems. Showed much more aggression today which is always a good thing. Also very good support running.
We need to show a bit more pace at the game re-start to stop giving space to the opposition and allowing them on top of us. However this is a very small point in a game full of enthusiastic support play. Right through all the games a Tarleton player was never isolated and always had a team mate to pass to. Superb individual runs, And a defensive line which only creaked when the kids were very tired. So a MASSIVE well done to the whole squad. A late mention for MARCUS LAZENBY- who could not make this fixture but was as scintillating as ever in last weeks training session. We are at home to Waterloo next week - see you there!
2 December 2007
West Park 6 Tarleton 9
West Park 4 Tarleton 2
As this has turned out to be the last fixture of 2007 for the 7s (weather forever our foe!!!) I thought I would attempt to put a match report together, So please forgive these first tentative scribblings!!!
On a very muddy surface and against decent opposition the lads put together a very good performance. The most pleasing aspects being the improvement in support play, We scored one try which went through the hands of all 7 players on the field!! And holding a decent defensive line for a lot longer. We played one game of 10 minutes each way and one of 5 minutes. Every single member of the squad turned in a great show:
Marcus Lazenby- Captain for the day and player of the day from the previous week, was his usual explosive self, Picking holes and grabbing tags all day. He finished with 5 tries and lead well as skipper.
Callum Davies- Ever improving, Grabbed himself a well earned try and was superb in defence. Always asking for the ball and running a lot straighter.
Sam Roberts- Our defensive co-ordinator!!! Pulling his team mates into a good line and plugging any holes he can see. Even occasionally asking for a run and making good yards when given the chance.
Callum Woolfenden- Youngest member of the squad, A great help in training, And his confidence seems to be growing. well done mate, Keep it up.
Robert Wincer- Scored a great individual try, from 20 yards out, Running 75 yards to get to the try line. West Park coach said "it was the best run he had seen all season".
Thomas Waterworth- Where did that run for that try come from!!! The most improved player in the team, Really played well all day in attack and defence.
Jacob Roberts- The quiet man of the team. As always ran all day, some excellent tagging, And good yards made. Also always found a Tarleton shirt when tagged.
Ryan Woolfenden- Last weeks captain, and this weeks deserved player of the day. Great support play, good passing, a few tags and 4 tries. Well done lad.
Daniel Couton-Christie- Running straight and creating havoc down the touch line, One excellent long range try, And forced numerous fouls as he had to be pushed out of play. Also defend wide very well.
Also a special mention for Jonothan and Jake Wincup who could not make this fixture. They have fitted into the squad very well and both have showed excellent enthusiasm. This was highlighted in how they played away at Sefton.
The games finished 9-6 and 4-2 to Tarleton. Well done to all involved with the under 7s. A big thank you to Janet. And a Very MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all from Barry and Gary.
