Fleetwood 12 Tarleton 7
The under 12's had another away game where they were entertained by hosts, Fleetwood RUFC on this bleak looking morning although quite warm with the odd rain shower. The guys arrived in force where we had a full squad including sub and Wayne and Nik's last words to them before their early kick off, was "big tackles lads and no lip to the ref!"
Nik and Wayne changed the squad around and the Ref today was Fleetwood's coach. It was decided that the game would be split into thirds; each playing for ten minutes.
Captain today was Harry and great big welcome back to Jack, who was playing his first match of the season. Ryan was sub to start with.
Fleetwood started the match with a drop kick, low to the left which Jack caught as it went out of play. A Tarleton scrum which Jack won, then got brought down but a cracking tackle by Conal who won the ball, saw George move forwards, head down. However the ref blew for a knock on and a Fleetwood scrum which had to be taken several times due to the Tarleton forwards being more superior, saw Fleetwood win the scrum only to be brought down by Jack who passed to Paul and then Angus who got into Tarleton's half of the pitch only for a ruck to be formed and an injury to a Fleetwood player. The ref blew as Fleetwood subbed their injured player and as a penalty was awarded, the kick was taken fast as Fleetwood ran forward into their own half but this is were the Tarleton defence kicked in and although the ball went over Fleetwood's try line, it didn't touch the ground and the ref blew for the ball being held up.
A scrum down which had to be reset a couple of times again saw Jack win the ball, pass to Paul and Paul kicked the ball high into the air to get it into Tarleton's half. Iwan who was free on the left hand side of the line, saw his opportunity and ran right up the pitch, so near to Tarleton's try line but got shoved out by Fleetwood. A Fleetwood line out saw Harry touch the ball as it fell for George. George hit the ground as a ruck was formed but some fabulous driving over here by Jake, Owen and Harry saw George keep possession as the ref blew for holding up. Tarleton's scrum was won again by Jack who passed to Eddie but a tackle on Eddie saw him brought down and the ball went out of play; line out to Tarleton. Owen threw the ball which had to be retaken a couple of times and eventually a scrum was formed which Jack won; a pass to Harry then George who saw Paul running forward unmarked. A cracking pass to Paul saw him brought down, still in possession of the ball with Owen, Joe, Jake and Declan driving over. As Paul tried to present the ball, Joe saw a spot and was about to go for it only for the ref to blow for a Fleetwood lad being off side. A quick penalty awarded to Tarleton saw a tap and kick taken by Jack which fell beautifully for Declan who saw his space, moved forward and a maul formed which included Harry and Jake. Somehow Paul won the ball, saw Marcus free who pushed forward with the help of Harry, Owen and Jake. The ref blew for the first break as Tarleton were in their own half. A quick, paced action packed first half.
The second part started with Angus off and Ryan on, a slight position change and Paul restarted as he shouted for the ball to go left; the ball hit a Fleetwood player and went out of play. A scrum formed which Jack won and passed to Paul who saw Declan free on his right, however Tarleton didn't drive over adqeuately and Fleetwood won the ball back and kicked forward up field. Tarleton chased the ball but another cracking tackle by Conal saw the ball fall loose to Paul, who got held up and the Ref blew for handling on the floor. A Fleetwood penalty awarded as they took it quickly and passed back. Owen was on the case and supported by Jake and Harry, saw Tarleton win the penalty here. A scrum formed which Fleetwood won but not for long as Jack was in the thick of it again saw Eddie free who passed to George. A high tackle on George saw the ref blow and a penalty awarded to Tarleton. Paul took the penalty kickly and pass back to George who passed to Conal. A pass back to Paul saw him brought down but presented to Iwan as Owen and Jake drove over. The Ref blew for a knock on and a scrum formed which Fleetwood won. Not for long however as Owen and Declan between them won the ball back and passed to Harry who was on Fleetwood's try line at this stage. A penalty awarded to Fleetwood who took it quick, the defence held up for a short time which included Marcus, Ryan, Joe, Paul, Eddie and Iwan saw Fleetwood score their first try but missed the conversion. Unfortunately Marcus let his side down by here by showing his disappointment to the Ref and got sent off and Angus went on. Angus slotted nicely into Marcus' position.
Paul restarted the game which had about two minutes remaining and kicked up field as Tarleton pushed forward. It was nice to see that no heads went down this time and Tarleton seemed more fired up than ever. The Ref blew and a penalty awarded to Tarleton for handing off by Fleetwood and a scrum formed as Fleetwood subbed one of their players. Jack won the scrum and passed to Paul. Support given here by Joe, George and Angus as Tarleton moved closer to their try line. A rough and tumble took place as Jack and a Fleetwood player clashed and Marcus went on as Ryan came off. The ref blew to end the second part of the match.
A quick talking to here by Nik and Wayne, saw the third section start quickly with a drop kick from Paul followed and chased by George, Owen, Jack and Marcus. Some great driving over here by Marcus and Owen saw Iwan win the ball as George presented. Iwan was tackled and brought down and a scrum formed which Jack won. Jack ran towards the Tarleton try line supported by his team mates and what seemed like an age, got the ball down for a try as the boys jumped for joy. The boys watched quitely as Paul took the conversion.
A Fleetwood drop kick went flying up the pitch, fell to Paul who passed to Jack and knowing Marcus was free on his left, did a crackling pass which saw Marcus, head down push forward with Owen and Jake behind. The ref blew for handing off and a scrum formed which Fleetwood won only to be brought down by Angus and Conal. The rain was getting heavy here as from nowhere, Fleetwood's forward won the ball and ran through the whole of the Tarleton side to score their second try and a great conversion.
As the game drew to a close, Marcus came off and Ryan back on for the last remaining seconds. When the Ref blew for full time, the lads shook hands and some words of praise were given to them by Nik and Wayne. I think we are all in agreement that it certainly was a much better game.
Man of the Match (awarded by Fleetwood's coach) went to Paul.
However I think I can say that it was a difficult decision as every team member gave positive imput into the performance and gave Nik and Wayne something to smile about.
I think there is a word of warning also to Marcus and Jack - no back chatting the Ref please!!
Squad: Jake (1) (Prop), Harry (2) (Hooker and Captain), Owen (3)(Prop), Angus (4)(2nd Row), Ryan (5)(2nd Row and Full Back), Joe (7) (Outside Centre) Declan (8)(Number Eight), Jack (9) Scrum half, Paul (11) (Fly Half), George (12) (1st Centre), Conal (13) (2nd Row), Eddie (14) (Wing), Marcus (15) (Full Back), Iwan (Wing)

Tarleton 0 Southport 24 (Game 1)
Tarleton 0 Collegiate 35 (Game 2)
A blustery and chilly Sunday, with a few spurts of rainfall, saw Carr Lane welcome two visitors; Southport RUFC and Collegiate RUFC under 12s to a Tarleton Triangular - our first home match of the new season.
The lads all arrived early for a good training session before kick off and Nik and Wayne put them through their paces using some of the new tactics they used in practice on Wednesday night's training session. We had a good turn out today with 14 lads; so Nik and Wayne had a full team including sub.
Owen was choosen as captain and Joe would manage the back line. The first match would be Tarleton v Southport and as you may remember from last year, our old friend Sam who now played for Southport, was captain for his new team. Mr Jon Guest was the referee.
Southport won the toss and kicked straight up field into Angus's arms; he was tackled but presented to George who passed to Jake. Jake was brought down (still holding the ball) but driving over support from Owen, Marcus and Harry, saw Jake present to George quick pass to Joe and then Declan. A ruck was formed with Marcus, Harry, Jake and Owen driving over, Marcus broke free, saw the ball loose and found a space only to be brought down by a high tackle from Southport. The ref below for a penalty and George quickly took the kick which Southport won; however their player was stopped half way up the pitch by Conal who did a cracking tackle, won the ball and presented to Declan whilst Jake, Iwan and Owen drove over - this was fast, actioned packed and showed the lads working as a team - Nik and Wayne were beaming!!! (- did I speak too soon??) Eddie found space and moved forward but got stopped quickly. Fab driving over again by Marcus, Owen, Jake and Ryan see Declan move forward but got stopped, just into Tarleton's half of the pitch and Southport won the ball, although it went out of play.
A penalty was awarded to Tarleton after a bad tackle on Declan, and Paul kicked up field and the ball went out of play, well into Tarleton's half and not so far from the try line. A line out formed, thrown by Paul only to be tapped by Iwan. Southport lineout; which they quickly won passed to their number 11, who had been chomping at the bit; he ran forward and although a tackle was put in by Jake and Iwan, he ran through the defence to score Southport's first try but unfortunately, their number 10 missed the conversion.
Joe dropped kicked to restart and it went long and to the right of the pitch. A line out formed which Southport won, he found himself free and unmarked and ran straight up the pitch to score Southport's second try within seconds of the first. This time their number 10, did a cracking conversion over the posts. Tarleton's heads went down :(
Joe restarted again and the ball went left of the pitch to fall straight into their number 8's arms who pushed forward; a great tackle by Paul with some driving over by Joe, Jake and Owen saw a knock on by Tarleton, the ref blew for a penalty to Southport and George got sent off for bad play (let this be a warning to you guys!!). Tom, who had been waiting patiently at the side came running on, a slight position change and a Southport penalty where a scrum was formed. Joe won the scrum and passed to Harry then Owen and Paul. The ball got held up (thanks Fiona for the techinical term!) and a penalty awarded to Southport, it was quickly taken and went out of play. A line out to Southport which went high but somehow Marcus won it but half of Southport's team rumbled him and he was under a pile of bodies including Paul and Joe and the ref blew for half time.
A good talking too after a cracking start but poor finish by Tarleton saw them rehydrated and motivated for the second half. Marcus came off and George went back on. Another change in positions.
A Tarleton drop kick saw a short ball fall into Southport's arms some good defensive play here which included Conal, Ryan, Jake and Owen in the mist of things and although it seemed like an age, Southport managed to push through us and scored their thired try but the conversion was missed.
A drop kick by Joe saw the ball won again by Southport's number 11 and although he got brought down, the ball bobbled free for a knock on to Southport. A scrum was formed which was twisted and then had to be restarted saw Angus win the ball and pass to Eddie who got held up again. After a ruck was formed which saw Harry, Owen and Jake driving over, the ball was loose and not protected and Southport saw their opportunity which fell to out old friend Sam was seem delighted to score Southport's forth and last try of the game quickly followed by a conversion by their number 20.
The last five minutes of the game saw Tarleton pick up their game and it was played mainly in Tarleton's area, very near to the try line. However Southport's defence was organised and although a try nearly scored by Paul and one by Owen, our first try didn't come and the ref blew for full time after twenty minutes play.
A rest, team talk, tactical changes and watching Southport B take on Collegiate, gave the lads some time to reflect on their game play.
Collegiate started the game and their drop kick fell to Declan but went out of play. A scrum formed which was won by Collegiate, saw Conal tackle their fast paced forward closely monitored by Joe and Owen; Conal presented to Paul who passed to Joe then George who kicked the ball up field and Collegiate caught only to be dropped by seeing a scary and loud looking Owen come racing down the pitch (closely supported by Harry and Jake). Tarleton's line out which was thrown by Paul and touched by Declan and Harry into George's direction. Unfortunately, George lost the ball and Collegiate's small pacey forward saw his opportunity and as in the first game, our boys seem to just watch him go flying past and Collegiate scored their first try and conversion.
Joe restarted the game but again the ball was caught by Collegiate and although Tom, Angus and Conal attempted a tackle, it was George who ended the worst off and was brought down and appeared to have half Collegiate's squad on him come out the worse as he was winded and had to come off to be replaced by Marcus.
Joe dropped kick left and the ball went out of play; line out to Collegiate, saw Harry bat the ball downwards where Eddie was unmarked. Eddie quickly manouvered between Collegiate's forwards only to be stopped by the defence but presented where Paul scoupped the ball up and passed to Declan and saw Angus free. Angus pushed forward with Conal, Marcus and Owen supporting. The ref blew for half time.
Collegiate restarted after the break which went left and straight upfield. The ref blew for a Tarleton penalty and a scrum formed only for them to win in and their small, fasted paced forward went flying up the pitch and in and out of the squad to score Collegiate's third try and followed by a neat conversion.
The lads heads were hanging now and after Joe restarted the match, some great effort by captain Owen, Harry, Paul and Jake, Collegiate put three more tries past us and three great conversions. I think it came a relief to all when the ref blew for full time. Declan had taken a nasty tackle and had to be helped off the pitch by Paul.
So after what was a promising start; it did end in disappointment.
Speaking to Nik and Wayne after the match they said "in training we had been teaching the lads some new technical terms and throughout the whole of both matches they were not used or used once or twice. If the boys had played like we had in training, we could have easily beat both sides as they were no better, just more organised, had good technical ability and had more passion!"
No Man of the Match but well done to Owen today on his captaincy.
For information, last season we played Southport once in the Southport Festival where they beat us 4-0 and played Collegiate once and lost 56-19.
Team: Jake (1) (front row), Paul (2) (hooker), Owen (3) (front row), Ryan (4) (second row), Declan (5) (second row), Joe (7) (fly half), Marcus (8) (Number Eight), George (9) (scrum half), Conal (11) (wing), Harry (12)(centre), Angus (13)(centre), Eddie (14)(wing), Iwan (15)(full back) and Tom(wing and full back)

Ormskirk 47 Tarleton 7
A bright Sunny but windy Sunday morning saw the Under 12's take a "drive up the road" to play our local rivals, Ormskirk. This game, as we all know, can go either way especially if they have the ref on their side but the team arrived optimistic and early for a coaching session with Nik and Wayne. The coaches had the added bonus of having a sub as new boys, Tom, Angus and Sam boosted the numbers of the squad. Bless him, Jack arrived still smiling but disappointed he was still out of action to encourage the lads and wished the new boys well on their debut match. Unfortunately Jake wasn't playing either as he was out with a knee injury he received when we played LSH two weeks ago.
A Tarleton huggle and squeeze and words of encouragement from Nik and Wayne saw the boys ready in their positions…………………. Captain of the team was Paul with Joe in charge of the back line. Ormskirk's coach (say no more) referreed the first half with Nik taking over in the second half.
A Tarleton drop kick taken by Joe fell straight into Ormskirk number 8's arms but the whistle blew and after about the fourth scrum attempt, it was formed but won by Ormskirk; Marcus managed to stop Ormskirk's number 19 from vooming up the pitch and after a rough and tumble which included Marcus, Owen, George and Paul, Marcus came off the worst with a studded thigh and bloody scratch on his face (sorry had to mention this after all the sympathy he needed over the weekend!!) and was taken off and replaced by Tom. A quick restart by Tarleton which saw Owen win the ruck and present the ball to Joe only for a tackle on Joe by Ormskirk's number 8 who went onto score Ormskirk's first try followed by a conversion.
Joe dropped kicked low which fell to Ormskirk; they got stopped in their tracks by new boy Angus and some good driving over by George, Harry and Owen. A line out was won by Ormskirk where the ball fell to their number 9 but an excellent tackle by Iwan saw him win the ball pass to Paul; Paul move forward supported by George and new boy Sam. Ormskirk won the ball back and were so organised and tidy they managed to score their second try although Owen was hanging off his ankles in every attempt to try and stop him. Ormskirk scored their second conversion.
Paul restarted the game which saw Sam and George involved but the lads head seem to drop at this stage and three more tries and conversions were scored. In this half following a scrum, a pass from George to Eddie saw Eddie running half way up the pitch and dodging in and out of the Ormskirk team only to be stopped three quarters into Tarleton's half; some excellent tackling by Conal and Angus and new boy Tom found himself in the middle of a ruck with Owen, Harry and Ryan driving over him!! Tom came out smiling though, thank goodness! When the half time whistle blew, I don't think it came soon enough.
A good talking to at half time, some refuelling and Marcus back on, Tom off and Nik take over as ref, saw Paul drop kick from the centre low; a run forward by Tarleton saw Joe win the ball and was pushed forward by Harry but somehow Ormskirk's number 8 who was beginning to be a pain, win the ball and Ormskirk sixth try scored, quickly followed by a conversion. Joe restarted the game but a knock on by Ormskirk saw George win the scrum, pass to Owen to Conal to Joe who got brought down. Another scrum formed which was won by Ormskirk's number 8 saw Harry in a fury and he literally hung off his back in attempt to win the ball back! Thanks to Harry the ball went out of play and a line out formed which was touched by Sam and caught by Marcus only to be won again by Ormskirk who scored their seven and final try followed by a conversion.
A Tarleton restart by Paul saw the lads move forward the ball bobbled and Angus got hold, Ormskirk won it then Marcus managed to win it back and held the ball until the ref blew. A scrum formed, which George won, pass to Joe then Harry, saw Iwan kick up field and the ball went out for a line out. Thanks to Harry, Tarleton won the line out pass to Owen, Marcus and then driven over by Harry saw Paul free on the left and he scored Tarleton's first and only try of the game within minutes of the second half finishing. Paul finished with a great conversion. Full time.
Nik and Wayne's feedback following the game was "if they had played like they did in the last five minutes of the match for the whole of the match they would have easily beat Ormskirk. They were no better than us just more organised". Food for thought I think!
Another big thank you to Jack for supporting his team mates today and thanks again to all the parents for bringing the boys and supporting them.
Well done to new boys, Sam, Tom and Angus who I think I can say for everyone had excellent debut matches in a very difficult and not so tidy game.
For information last season we played Ormskirk twice, losing to them at Ormskirk 33-0 and winning in the Barclays Cup Match at Tarleton 28-14.
Team: Harry (1) (front row), Paul (2) (hooker), Owen (3) (front row), Ryan (4) and Marcus (5) (second row), Joe (7) (fly half), Declan (number 8), George (9) (scrum half), Sam (11) (wing), Angus (12) (centre), Conal (13) (centre), Eddie (14) (wing), Iwan (15) (full back) and Tom (sub to start)
Man of the Match (as voted by Ormskirk) was George. Congratulations George.

LSH 28 Tarleton 12
A damp and overcast Sunday morning saw the Under 12s travel down to Liverpool St Helens for the first game of the 2013-14 campaign. This was Nik and Wayne's first match in charge and of course a welcome back debut match for our old friend George.
We were short of players with poor Jack out with his mouth injury, Ryan with sickness and Declan on holiday. However not one to let his team down, Jack came down to support his mates and became 'third coach' as he encouraged and gave advice whilst running the line to keep the boys' spirits up.
Captain of the team was George with Joe in charge of the back line.
Today's ref was LSH's Lead Coach.
LSH kicked off and the drop kick went towards the left of the pitch where it fell low; Tarleton moved forward with Conal supported by George and Owen held the ball but it went out of play after a LSH touch. Scrum formed which George won, pass to Joe who kicked the ball right up the pitch, caught by LSH who saw their opening and their number 24 got through where the borrowed LSH's players were defending to score their first try followed by a conversion.
Joe took the drop kick which fell low and to the right; caught by LSH but an awesome tackle by Owen presented to George who passed to Marcus, saw Marcus break free, brought down but presented to George. A ruck formed which included Paul, George, Joe and Eddie saw Paul win the ball and pass to Eddie but he got knocked out of play. A LSH line out which saw Harry touch the ball and fall to our borrowed number 4 who passed to Joe then Marcus and Jake. A maul was formed with Jake, Marcus, Owen and in the middle pushed gently by Harry, Iwan and Conal. Some wonderful team work here displayed by Tarleton where they defended their line which seemed like an age much to LSH's frustrations. Tarleton pushed the ball up to the their quarter where it stayed for the majority of this first half however the ref blew for a penalty and the scrum formed which LSH won; their number 15 found an opening and although Joe took his legs out, they managed to score their second try, followed by a conversion.
Joe kicked up field; it fell to LSH who did some great passing to move the ball into their half however again some excellent defending by Tarleton, great driving over, Tarleton's first try was nearly scored when Eddie did a cracking run up the wing up to the touch line but the ball just didn't fall for them. The ref blew for a short break in the first quarter.
A Tarleton huggle, encouraging team chat , slight position change for some of the boys and rehydration from the new team water bottles, Tarleton where warying to go. Joe kicked straight up field; it fell into LSH's hands; a great tackle by Jake closely followed by Paul saw LSH keep the ball; a tackle went in by Conal on their number 18 (who was about four times bigger than Conal!!) saw Conal at the bottom of the ruck present to Paul who was protected by Marcus saw Marcus pass to Harry, supported by Iwan, Owen and Jake moved towards the Tarleton try line but LSH well defended. The ref blew and scrum formed which LSH own but the ball went out of play. A drop kick by Joe to the left saw Harry, Owen and Paul charge forward. This is how the first half finished with some great teamwork where the driving over, the line and constant support for each other shone threw. However LSH had another lucky break and managed to score their third try and third conversion following excellent defending for what seemed like an age by Tarleton . The ref blew for half time to and a roar of support from the Tarleton parents and Jack.
LSH restarted the second half where their drop kick fell into Paul's arms; Paul passed to George who moved forward and saw Harry free on the right of him. Harry ran half way up the pitch and eventually brought down with most of LSH's team attached to him and the ball went out of play. An LSH line out where Marcus fought for the ball saw him pass to Iwan; got brought down (still holding the ball) but again another fantastic drive over by Harry, Owen, Jake (and most of the team to be honest!) saw Iwan keep hold of that ball until the ref blew. A scrum formed, George won saw Paul free on his left, quick pass and a rough and tumble on Tarleton's try line, saw Paul score the first Tarleton try of the season!! Unfortunately Joe missed the conversion.
LSH start saw Paul catch the ball and pass to Harry then George protected by Owen and Jake but the ball went out of play. A line out by Tarleton saw Paul throw and Jake catching it; he saw Harry free who then pushed forward and scored Tarleton's second try!! Paul scored the conversion. The ref then blew for quarter time.
Another team chat, rehydration and Tarleton huggle saw the boys on a high!!! Joe kicked off and it fell to LSH and super tackle by George, pass to Marcus (with Owen supporting him) saw Tarleton move forward. Marcus took a knock but George scooped up the ball, quick pass to Joe who kicked it up field but the ball went out of play. LSH line out caught by LSH saw them run to their try line but the boys held the line brilliantly here however LSH managed to score their fourth and final try quickly followed by a conversion. Full time.
Squad and Scorers: Jake (1 front row), Paul (2 hooker) (1 try and 1 conversion), Owen (3 front row), Conal (4 second row), Marcus (5 second row), Harry (Number 8) (1 try), George (9 scrum half), Joe (12 fly half), Eddie (14 wing), Iwan (15 full back)
Man of the Match (as voted by LSH) was Harry. Well done Harry!!
